She Had 8 Symptoms. One Test Explained All of Them.
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) — also called the Energy Blueprint — is a non-invasive test that measures mineral levels and ratios at the cellular level by analyzing a small hair sample. Unlike standard blood work, which compensates to maintain normal-looking values even when the body is depleted, HTMA reveals what’s actually been happening inside your cells over the past 3–4 months. This case study shows how one woman’s eight unresolved symptoms — including fatigue, hair loss, joint pain, insomnia, bloating, and constant cold — were all explained by a single HTMA test, and what we found that her blood work had completely missed.
I want to show you something.
This is a real Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis — what I call the Energy Blueprint — from a client I’ll call Maggie. Not her real name. Her real test.
Before she came to me, Maggie had done everything right. Seen the doctors. Run the blood work. Heard “everything looks normal” so many times she’d stopped arguing with it. She figured this was just her life now.
What Maggie Was Dealing With Every Single Day
Every single day, Maggie was managing:
- Exhausted no matter how much she slept
- Hair coming out in the shower
- Bloated and uncomfortable after almost every meal
- Joints stiff and achy every morning
- Muscle pain that never really went away
- Constantly cold
- Holding water
- Waking up at 3am and lying there for hours
Her labs said fine.
Eight symptoms. All of them dismissed. All of them real.
This is where Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis — the Energy Blueprint — changes everything.
What Her HTMA Results Showed
The moment I looked at Maggie’s Energy Blueprint results, the story was right there on the page.
The Numbers That Told Everything

Her calcium reading came in at 506 — so high it disappears off the top of the standard chart. Her potassium? 2. The bar barely exists. Sodium was just as depleted at 5.
Now look at what those numbers mean when you look at the ratios.

The Ca/K Ratio — Why She Was Losing Her Hair and Always Cold
Maggie’s calcium-to-potassium ratio (Ca/K) was 253. It’s supposed to sit around 4.
This ratio is what tells us how well thyroid hormone is actually getting into the cells — not whether the thyroid is producing it, but whether the body can use it. At 253, it can’t. Not even close.
The thyroid governs metabolism, digestion, temperature regulation, and hair growth. When thyroid hormone can’t get into the cell, all of those things slow down together. That’s why she was cold. That’s why her digestion had slowed to a crawl. That’s why her hair was falling out.
Blood work said her thyroid was fine. And technically, it was — it was producing hormone. The problem wasn’t production. The problem was utilization. And blood work doesn’t look there.
The Na/Mg Ratio — Why Her Adrenals Were Spent
Maggie’s sodium-to-magnesium ratio (Na/Mg) was 0.38. Optimal is around 4.
This is the adrenal ratio. Her adrenals were completely spent. And when the adrenals are this depleted, the body loses its ability to regulate fluid properly. Digestion slows down. The gut becomes sluggish. Bloating becomes a constant companion.
This is why she was holding water. This is why she couldn’t get comfortable after eating. All of it, right there on the chart.
The Calcium Shell — Why She Couldn’t Sleep or Move Freely
When calcium gets this high relative to everything else, it stops acting like a mineral and starts acting like a wall.
We call this a calcium shell. It’s associated with disrupted sleep, joint stiffness, emotional numbness — a body that has essentially locked up, trying to protect itself by going into physiological shutdown.
The insomnia. The joint pain. The muscle aches. All of it, right there. None of it on her blood work.
Why Blood Work Missed All of This
This is the question I get asked most often, and it’s worth really understanding.
Blood is a compensator. It will pull minerals from your cells, your bones, your tissues — whatever it has to do — to keep everything looking normal on a panel. Maintaining blood balance is a survival function. The body will sacrifice the cell to protect the blood.
That’s not a flaw. That’s physiology doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. The problem is that we’re using blood work as our only window into what’s happening, when the blood is actively hiding the problem.
Hair doesn’t compensate. Hair just records what’s been happening at the cellular level over the last 3–4 months. It doesn’t lie. It doesn’t round up. What’s there is there — and what’s not there is just as telling.
Think of it like this: blood work is a snapshot of what’s circulating right now. Hair is the fossil record of what your body has actually been doing.
What We Did About It (And What We Didn’t Do)
Here’s what we didn’t do: a restrictive protocol. A detox. Cutting out food groups. None of that.
We started with potassium and sodium — because when these are this depleted, nothing else can work properly. Other minerals can’t get into the cell. Thyroid hormone can’t get into the cell. You can take every supplement on the shelf and most of it just passes right through.
We gave her body what it was actually missing. And we watched the whole system start to respond.
The hair loss, the bloating, the cold, the joint pain — these aren’t separate problems with separate solutions. They’re one story. And it was all right there on one test.
How Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis Works: The Energy Blueprint
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) measures 20–35 minerals and heavy metals in a small hair sample — typically taken from the back of the head — and maps them against optimal reference ranges and, more importantly, against each other.
The ratios are where the real information lives. Because it’s not just whether you have enough of a given mineral — it’s whether the minerals are in the right relationship to each other to do their jobs.
The Energy Blueprint is my name for the complete HTMA package: the test itself plus a full results review with me. We go through your chart together — your numbers, your patterns, your starting point. Not a generic handout. Not a supplement list based on what everyone else is getting. Your specific mineral map.
This is not a diagnostic tool. It doesn’t replace your doctor or diagnose disease. What it does is give us an extraordinarily clear picture of how your body has been handling stress, energy production, mineral utilization, thyroid and adrenal function — and where the gaps are that might be driving the symptoms you’ve been told to just live with.
What the Energy Blueprint Reveals
- Your mineral levels at the cellular level (not just what’s circulating in blood)
- Thyroid and adrenal stress patterns — including utilization, not just production
- Metabolic rate — whether you’re in a fast or slow oxidation pattern
- Heavy metal burden that may be displacing essential minerals
- Why specific supplements you’ve tried haven’t been working
- A targeted starting point so we’re not guessing
What Happens After You Get Your Results
Once your test is processed, we meet for a private 45-minute results review. I walk you through your chart exactly the way I walked through Maggie’s — explaining what each number and ratio means, how they connect to your symptoms, and what your body actually needs. You leave with answers instead of more questions.

The Bottom Line on HTMA and Symptoms That Blood Work Misses
If you’ve been told you’re fine while your body is telling you something completely different — you’re not imagining it. You just haven’t been looking in the right place yet.
Standard blood work is not designed to catch functional mineral imbalances. It’s designed to catch disease. Those are two very different thresholds.
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis looks at the space between “diagnosable” and “thriving.” That’s the space where most of us are living — functional enough to be told we’re fine, but not well enough to actually feel good.
That’s the space the Energy Blueprint was built for.
Frequently Asked Questions About HTMA and the Energy Blueprint
Can HTMA explain why I have so many symptoms but my blood work is normal?
Yes — and this is actually one of the most common patterns I see. Blood work is designed to catch disease-level dysfunction, and it does that well. But it’s not built to detect functional mineral depletion or imbalance at the cellular level. HTMA looks at how your body has been managing minerals inside the cells over the past several months — and that’s often where the explanation for chronic, overlapping symptoms lives.
What does a calcium shell mean on an HTMA test?
A calcium shell pattern appears when calcium is extremely elevated relative to potassium and other minerals. It’s associated with physiological shutdown — the body’s attempt to protect itself under prolonged stress. Symptoms commonly linked to a calcium shell include insomnia (especially waking between 2–4am), joint stiffness, muscle aches, emotional numbness or disconnection, and fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix. It’s not a diagnosis; it’s a pattern that gives us a meaningful starting point.
Why does the Ca/K ratio matter for thyroid function?
The calcium-to-potassium ratio reflects how well thyroid hormone is getting into the cells — not whether the thyroid gland is producing it. Standard thyroid blood panels (TSH, T3, T4) measure production and circulation. But if the Ca/K ratio is severely imbalanced, thyroid hormone may be circulating in the blood while being largely unable to enter the cells and do its job. This is why some people have “normal” thyroid labs but continue experiencing classic thyroid symptoms like hair loss, cold intolerance, slow digestion, and fatigue.
What is the difference between the Energy Blueprint and a Functional Health Panel?
The Energy Blueprint (HTMA) uses a hair sample to reveal mineral patterns and cellular stress over the past 3–4 months. The Functional Health Panel uses blood to assess real-time markers including insulin, full thyroid panel, metabolic function, and inflammation. They answer different questions — and together they provide a remarkably complete picture. I offer both as standalone tests and as part of the Total Wellness Work-Up.
