Functional Labs to Ask Your Doctor for If You’re Over 40

Standard labs are designed to diagnose disease. Functional labs are designed to give you key insight to how your body is functioning.

Most people assume their annual lab work is telling them everything they need to know about their health.

But here’s the reality: standard lab testing isn’t designed to optimize your health—it’s designed to diagnose disease.

And by the time something is flagged as “out of range,” it’s too late — dysfunction has already set in.

That’s why so many people feel off for years, only to be told their labs are “normal.”

Sound familiar?

But what if you could use lab work differently…

What if you could catch imbalances before they turn into real problems?

It’s 100% possible when you know what you’re looking for —

Which is why I put together the Total Wellness Work-Up.

I want you to be able to spot dysfunction early on before it becomes disease…

So you never have to settle for “labs look good” when you know something’s not right.

Why Standard Lab Ranges Aren’t Enough

Traditional lab ranges are based on the average (90%) of the population—meaning you’re being compared to a general population that is, let’s be honest, not the picture of health.

You don’t want to be average in that data set.
You want to be optimal.

That’s where a functional approach comes in…

Where lab work is a proactive tool to assess how your body is functioning so you can support it where it needs it most.

What Functional Labs to Request & What To Look For

The right tests—combined with a trained eye looking beyond the “red flag” system—can give you critical insights into what’s really going on under the hood.

These are the essential labs I recommend everyone run at least annually:

📌 Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) – Assesses kidney & liver function, blood sugar balance, and electrolyte status.

📌 Complete Blood Count w/ Differential (CBC) – Evaluates immune function, oxygen-carrying capacity, and signs of infections or deficiencies.

📌 Lipid Panel – Looks beyond cholesterol to assess heart disease risk, signs of liver distress, and metabolic health.

📌 Full Thyroid Panel (TSH, Total T4, Free T4, Total T3, Free T3, Reverse T3, TPO, and Tg antibodies) – Shows specifically where thyroid hormone issues lie. TSH alone doesn’t tell you enough.

📌 Fasting Insulin – Key marker to catch blood sugar issues in the early stages and prevent pre-Diabetes and Diabetes.

📌 Hemoglobin A1c – Tracks long-term blood sugar regulation and metabolic health risk.

📌 Homocysteine – An essential marker for cardiovascular health and methylation function (read: detoxification, DNA repair, and inflammation).

📌 CRP – A key measure of systemic inflammation and heart risk.

📌 Vitamin D – Essential for immune health, hormone balance, and disease prevention.

📌 B12 – Needed for energy, nerve function, and red blood cell production; insight into digestive function and nutrient absorption.

Standard blood labs only include the first three panels in this list. And of those, they only flag what’s out of range.

But what about what’s happening before that?

This is exactly why I put together the Total Wellness Work-Up.

The Work-Up helps you understand what your lab work is really telling you and how to use that information to support your body so you can feel better.

With the Work-Up, you’ll:

✅ Learn how to read between the lines and spot dysfunction in your lab work
✅ Understand where you are in the “gray area” of dysfunction
✅ Get guidance on what your body needs to function optimally
✅ Leave with a personalized plan based on your health history, symptoms, and goals

The Work-Up includes all the functional labs listed above, plus advanced mineral analysis testing to fill in the picture — giving you an intracellular level of detail you can’t get looking at blood alone.

With this one simple and non-invasive test, we can identify mineral imbalances and pinpoint how they’re impacting your energy, metabolism, hormones, and overall health.

That means no more trial and error—just answers and solutions designed specifically for you.

Prefer to order labs through your doctor? No problem. Just reach out, and I can tell you exactly what to request and give you a coupon code to subtract the cost of labs from the Work-Up.

Your health is too precious to take the “wait and see” approach.

Imagine–finally having answers to the health issues you’ve had for years. Being able to see where the gaps are, and most importantly, knowing what you can do to feel good – like really good – again.

There’s a better, more proactive way.

And it starts right here.
