It’s hard to not be a little obsessed with being healthy these days. It seems like everywhere you look someone’s talking about the paleo diet, green smoothies, chia seeds… and every other food that’s the “healthiest on the planet.” Trying to keep up with it all is enough to drive one to the exact opposite of healthy. And that sort of defeats the purpose in the first place now doesn’t it?
This quote comes from Annemarie Colbin – I heard her say it when I was studying at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and it’s stuck with me ever since. It’s easy to get wrapped up in all the information that’s out there and forget it’s not about being healthy for health’s sake. It’s about getting the most out of life.
Health is not the end. It’s just the means. It’s what gets you out of bed in the morning. Gives you the strength to run that extra mile that puts you over your edge. Keeps you going until 2:00 a.m. on a night out with your girlfriends. Lets you get down on the floor to play with your kids. Health gives you options, removes barriers, creates opportunities. But we don’t talk about it like that. Instead we talk about chia seeds and diet/health speak that people either get lost in or avoid all together. It’s time to get our eyes back on the prize in the way we talk about health. So I try to keep Dr. Colbin in my head: “It’s more than just about being healthy. It’s about what being healthy allows you to do.”
I realize that as a health food blogger I’m a contributor to the “chia seed talk.” That’s why I want to introduce “Food for Thought” as a way to add a little healthy perspective on food, health and life. I’ll share things I find that are inspiring, motivating and thought provoking. And I hope you’ll find them to be too. I figure we can all use a little of that every now and then. Here’s to keeping the eye on the prize.
What does being healthy allow you to do?
I do read all of your blog messages; this one is inspiring! Thank you for what you give to others Megan! Have a great day!
This so true. We need to refocus.
